DKU Talks “Civic Activism in Central Asia: Roots, Dynamics and Prospects»

The Kazakh-German University is pleased to invite all to the DKU Talk on “Civic Activism in Central Asia: Roots, Dynamics and Perspectives”, taking place in online format on November 27, at 4 pm (Almaty time).

One of the notable developments in recent times has been the growth of civic activism and social movements in the region. How can one explain the surge of civic activity, what role social movements play in a society and who is the driving force within them? We will talk about these and other questions with experts from Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan Asel Doolotkeldieva, Nurseit Niyazbekov and Kamila Kovyazina.

Dr. Asel Doolotkeldieva is a lecturer and researcher at the OSCE Academy in Bishkek. She is the author of a number of research publications on social mobilizations and protests, political economics of resource extraction and resource nationalism, post-socialism, political regimes and civil society in Central Asia.

Dr. Nurseit Niyazbekov is an assistant professor at KIMEP University and is an expert on social movements and democratization in the post-communist and developing countries, political culture and civil society in Central Asia. Dr. Niyazbekov completed his doctoral thesis on protest mobilization and democratization in Kazakhstan at Oxford University. He is also the country coordinator for Kazakhstan on the “Varieties of Democracy” project at the University of Gothenburg in Sweden.

Kamila Kovyazina is a research fellow at the Institute of World Economy and Politics under the Foundation of the First President of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the head of the project on development of the youth corps of the MES and the World Bank. She has extensive experience in public policy research in Kazakhstan.

The working language during the event is Russian.
